These Crispy Baked Sweet Hot Chicken Wings have a good amount of heat with a little brown sugar sweet to tame it down just a little. Lip smacking delicious, these baked to a crisp chicken wings will disappear in the blink of an eye!
I really hate deep frying, however, the one thing that is best about deep frying chicken wings is the skin gets all crispy, that is, if they are deep fried correctly. We rarely eat deep fried foods so I decided to try making some oven wings to see if I could get them to be as good as deep fried. I believe I did better than that because I believe these were far superior than the deep fried chicken wing!
Nobody like soggy chicken skin and let’s face it, you can still get soggy chicken skin with a deep fried wing. Its all in the temperature and method. The same goes for these baked chicken wings. The temperature you bake them in and the method you use makes a big difference in crispness!
First you need about 2 pounds of chicken wings. I love the Organic Chicken Wing sections we get from Trader Joes. I think they are the best out there.
When you lay your wings out, you want to use aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray. This helps prevent a greasy sticky mess on your baking sheet. You also do not want to overcrowd your chicken wings. You want the heat surrounding your wings to be able to get around the whole wing and crisp it up. Don’t forget to season them with salt and pepper before baking also.
Your results should look like the wings above! Nice and crispy and ready for coating with some delicious wing sauce!
Our hot sauce preference in this house for wings is Frank’s Red Hot. When Grumpy found out I was making wings, he told me if I wasn’t making them with Frank’s, I may as well dump them in the trash can! I wasn’t about to dump them in the trash can, but I also was craving some Franks Red Hot. So I decided to make a regular batch of my sauce, then add a little brown sugar to the heat to sweeten the deal.
These wings were all we ate the night we had them so we ate the whole two pounds between us! That brown sugar caramelization in the Franks mixture was perfect. Our wings did not get soggy and I will definitely make these again!
When making wings in the oven remember:
- Use a high temperature. 400 degrees is perfect.
- Do not let the wings crowd each other, leave a good amount of space between each wing to allow the hot air to surround it and crisp the chicken skin.
What is your favorite sauce to top chicken wings?
- 2 lb chicken wing pieces (I use frozen)
- cooking spray
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1/3 cup butter
- 1/2 cup Frank’s Red Hot Sauce
- 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar
- Blue Cheese or Ranch Sauce for dipping
- Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Line baking sheet with aluminum foil and coat with cooking spray. Place frozen chicken wings on baking sheet and spray tops of chicken wings with cooking spray. Season with salt and pepper. Bake in oven for 20 minutes. Turn wings over onto other side and bake another 30 minutes. Remove wings from oven and place in mixing bowl.
- To make sauce: In a small saucepan place butter, red hot sauce, worcestershire sauce and brown sugar. Bring to a slow simmer and cook over low heat for about 3 minutes.
- Pour sauce over wings and toss to coat.
These chicken wings look absolutely mouth-watering!
I never used to be a wing fan — but recently (within the last year) I’ve changed my mind. Now we’ll do wings for dinner as a treat! These look great — and I don’t fry mine either — just need a hot oven!
Perfect timing! I just cut up some wings yesterday. We love trying new wing recipes and this one looks awesome. All the better they are baked!
What’s crazy is I do have all these ingredients . Maybe its a sign!
Oh yes, I need these in my life right now (fedex some over? 😉 )
Looks like a fabulous dinner to me, too!!! Thanks for all the tips–it’s been years since I’ve made wings, and that’s got to change 🙂

These are some of the best wings I’ve ever had. They are fall off the bone tender, crisp. And the sauce is a perfect blend of sweet and hot. If we rate on a five star scale, five being the best. I give these a seven!
This makes me so happy to read Perry! Thank you for coming back and letting me know!
