    Inspiration

Lately we are into making caramelized onions. All the time. We recently made this Caramelized Onion Grilled Cheese sandwich and Caramelized Onion Blue Cheese Burger.

The flavor of a caramelized onion just can't be beat. And, when making French Onion Soup, the onions are always caramelized first.

When my children were little I would always mix a packet of onion soup mix with our ground beef to make burgers. So, I decided to take it a step further and add the caramelized onions and swiss cheese to make these French Onion Burgers!

    🍔 Burger Month

May happens to be Burger Month. The last several years I have participated with Kita celebrating all things burger. This year is a little different. With COVID and some of us still have a lot of life events happening. So, Kita decided to still host, but we will not be doing a giveaway this year.

However, the great thing is, we can still get out there and make our burgers and share them with our readers. So, in celebration of Burger Month, I am sharing this French Onion Burgers recipe with you.

    🥘 Ingredients

Ground Beef, I like to buy 80/20 or 85/15. The fat is part of what gives the ground beef so much delicious flavor and I don't like to cut out on the flavor.

Caramelized Onions, here is a recipe that tells you how to make caramelized onions in a hurry!

Swiss Cheese Slices, try to buy thick cut slices. You really don't want to skimp on cheese for this recipe.

Onion Rolls, you can find these in the bakery section of the grocery store.

    🔪 Instructions

    Step 1:

    1. Break up the ground beef into a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle the beef with the onion soup mix and coconut aminos.
    2. Gently mix together the beef mixture until just combined. Divide into 4 sections and shape into patties.

    Step 2:

    1. Cook the beef patties on a hot grill or grill pan until cooked to desired level of doneness.
    2. Turn off the heat and while still on the grill, top the burgers with caramelized onions.
    3. Top the onions with the swiss cheese and allow the burger set for 30 seconds to allow the heat to start melting the cheese.
    4. Serve the French Onion Burgers on a toasted roll.

    💭 Top Tips

    • When mixing and shaping the burger into patties, do so as gently and with as little mixing as possible to avoid overworking the meat.
    • Oil the grill grate to prevent sticking
    • Before cooking the burgers, place an indent in the center of the patty . This allows the meat to cook more evenly.
    • Don't flip the burgers more than once.
    • Use a meat thermometer to ensure the burgers are reaching the desired level of doneness.
    • You need a roll that will hold up to the messiness of this burger. Use a soft but sturdy bun to sandwich the burger in. I used deli made onion rolls. A brioche roll is another good choice.
    • Make sure to butter and grill the burger roll before serving. This add a ton of flavor to the sandwich.

    📖 Variations

    • Substitute soy sauce, worcestershire sauce, or steak sauce for the coconut aminos.
    • Add crispy cooked bacon to the toppings for a French Onion Burger with Bacon!
    • Use provolone or mozzarella cheese slices instead of swiss.

    🥗 Side dishes

Below are some great side dish ideas to serve with this French Onion Burger.
