See recipe card for quantities.
How to Make Blue Cheese Burgers
- Step 1: Cook onions with butter on low in a large skillet for 20 minutes
- Step 2: Add the bourbon and brown sugar to the onions. Simmer til most of the liquid is absorbed.
- Step 3: Mix together beef, bourbon, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Shape into patties.
- Step 4: Grill burgers to desired degree of doneness.
- Step 5: Top burgers with blue cheese crumbles.
- Step 6: Place burger on bun with lettuce, tomato, and bourbon caramelized onions.
Hint: let the grill run for 4-5 minutes to burn off any remnants, then clean it. I like to use this bristle-free barbecue brush (affiliate link) for cleaning the grill.
Substitutions
- Protein swap - use ground chicken, turkey, or venison in place of the ground beef.
- Cheese swap - use your favorite cheese in place of the blue cheese crumbles. Feta cheese would be a great one!
- Make it keto - use truvia brown sugar (affiliate link) for the onions (or leave it out) and make these keto burger buns to serve the burgers on.
Variations
Change this recipe to your own liking or follow some of the variations below.
- Bacon love - top the burgers with crispy cooked bacon.
- Deluxe - add guacamole, crispy onions or crispy jalapenos
- Kid friendly - omit the bourbon in the recipe.
Equipment
- Large skillet
- Cutting board
- Sharp knife
- Grill (Gas or Charcoal) OR a Grill pan to cook the burgers on the stove.
- Large bowl
Storage
Store the caramelized onions separately from the burgers and buns in the fridge, and reheat when ready. Good for 2-3 days.
Top Burger Tip
- When shaping the burger patty, make a well in the center. This will allow an indentation that will hold the blue cheese crumbles without them falling off.
- If you don't have a grill, a grill pan or skillet will do the job cooking the burgers.
