    🙋 Recipe FAQ's

    What is a Piña Colada?

The classic Piña Colada is a cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut, and pineapple chunks or juice. It can be served blended or shaken and is usually garnished with a maraschino cherry and/or pineapple wedge served in a hurricane glass.

What is the best blender for making a frozen pina colada?

You'll want a blender powerful enough to produce crushed ice, preferably one that gets up to 1000 watts.

    What is cream of coconut?

Cream of coconut is sweetened and processed coconut cream and is often used in cocktails and desserts.

Can you substitute coconut milk for cream of coconut?

Yes, however, if doing so, be sure to add simple syrup to taste to replace the sugar in the cream of coconut.

    💭 Tips

    • Freeze the glass the pina colada will be served in at least an hour before making.
    • Crushing the ice before blending the drink will help to achieve a smooth texture.
    • The pineapple can be frozen to eliminate the ice.

    📖 Variations

    • Use your favorite rum, preferably a white rum and a gold rum.
    • Substitute vanilla ice cream for the cream of coconut for a pina colada shake.
    • Make this a virgin pina colada and substitute ½ coconut water and ½ pineapple juice for the rum.
    • Switch to a shaken piña colada by substituting ½ cup of pineapple juice for the pineapple chunks, add the ingredients to a shaker with a generous amount of ice, and shake vigorously, pouring the contents into a tall glass.
Pouring the blended beverage into a glass mug.

    🏫 What I've Learned

There are many versions of when the original recipe was invented. The name means strained pineapple and the first record of its creation is by a pirate in 19th century Puerto Rico to boost the morale of his crew. That recipe was lost on the pirate's death and while the story of who invented it change, its origin is always in Puerto Rico.

That looks delicious! I think it's going to be a hot one today so I'll have to see if I have some rum in the house. By the way, what brand of cream of coconut is that? I like that it's not in a can.
