Easy recipe: although this recipe entails frying, it is super simple and fast making this an easy weeknight dinner the whole family will love.
New Taco Tuesday favorite: everyone loves the crunchy buffalo cauliflower wings, and the combination of flavor and textures addictingly delicious!
🥘 Ingredients
Cauliflower: buy the whole head of cauliflower and break it down into bite-sized pieces.
Flour: all purpose flour will be part of the crispy batter on the cauliflower.
Cornstarch: this will aid in making a very crispy tempura like batter.
Frank's Red Hot Seasoning blend: this is added to the tempura batter to add extra buffalo flavor
White and purple cabbage mix: to make an optional slaw
Green onions and/ or fresh cilantro: to sprinkle on top of the tacos and to use in making the sauce.
Flour tortillas or corn tortillas: street taco size is best.
Hot sauce: my preference is Frank's hot sauce, you will use this to make your own spicy buffalo sauce.
Butter: to make the buffalo sauce.
Soda water: to mix the tempura batter.
🔪 Instructions
- Wash, dry, and chop cauliflower into bite sized pieces. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, Frank's seasoning blend, and soda water until combined.
- Add cauliflower pieces to the batter and stir to coat combine cauliflower and batter, coating all of the pieces completely.
- Add oil to a large skillet at least 2 inches deep. Heat a oil over medium high heat until it reaches a temperature of 350 degrees.
- Using a fork, remove cauliflower piece by piece from the bowl, tapping the fork on the edge of the bowl to remove any excess batter.
- Add to hot oil and cook for 3-4 minutes, turning cauliflower occasionally, until cauliflower is crispy about browned.
- Remove fried cauliflower wings from the hot oil with a slotted spoon and place in a paper towel lined large bowl to drain any excess oil.
- In a large saucepan over medium heat, add the butter and heat until melted and bubbly. Add the white part of the green onion and cook for 1 minute, until softened.
- Whisk the hot sauce and cayenne pepper into the butter. Pour buffalo sauce over top of the fried cauliflower, tossing well until all pieces of cauliflower are coated.
- Serve as wings with dipping sauce or in soft tortillas with your favorite toppings.
🥄 Equipment
Large skillet: you want a skillet with deep sides since you will essentially be deep frying the cauliflower.
Skimmer: use a metal skimmer that can be used in hot oil.
Large bowl
Small saucepan
🥫Storage
Refrigerate: store leftover buffalo cauliflower in an airtight container in the fridge up to 5 days.
Freeze: in a freezer safe container up to 3 months.
Reheat: refrigerated or frozen buffalo cauliflower can be reheated in the oven or the air fryer. Place cauliflower in a single layer on a parchment paper lined baking sheet or air fryer and reheat at 350 degrees for 7-10 minutes until hot.
📖 Variations
- Feel free to use your favorite buffalo sauce (premade) in place of the buffalo sauce recipe.
- Skip the tortillas and serve these as buffalo cauliflower wings with a side of blue cheese or ranch dressing.
- Substitute a teaspoon each of cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt, and black pepper.
- Toss together 2 cups of cabbage slaw mix with 1 teaspoons rice vinegar, 2 teaspoons lime juice, 1 teaspoon sugar, and pinch of salt. Top tacos with slaw.
💭 Tips
- Be sure to dip and place individual pieces of battered cauliflower in the hot oil in an even layer. This will prevent the cauliflower from clumping and frying together.
- For best results, do not substitute the cornstarch for regular flour. You will not get that extra crispy buffalo cauliflower end result if you do.
- If you need to substitute cornstarch, use a gluten free rice flour or potato starch.
