A couple of weeks ago Grumpy and I took an impromptu visit to Salem, Massachusetts. We have both been outrageously busy. Grumpy especially, with his work hours consuming him. One comment he always would make to me was he wanted to go to Salem with me one day. Our first visit was going to be the Witch House, I was anxious to see what I would discover there!
That one day finally came! After about 4 weeks of looking for things for us to do, we hopped in our car and took the 3 hour drive to Boston. We arrived at our hotel, got settled in, and relaxed with a few drinks at the bar along with some good conversation with the bartenders.
Our stay at our hotel, the Courtyard by Marriott, Woburn, while it was a good 20 minute drive from Salem, was a very good experience. Our first night there we had a few drinks and some great conversation with the bartenders, Michael and Monica . It was clean, there was Starbucks (Yay!) and very comfy.
Saturday morning we had breakfast at this little mom and pop place called Dot and Ray's we found on the way into Salem. It was exactly what we were looking for, a place we could get breakfast at any time of the day. It was clean, the staff were friendly, and the food was not greasy and terrible.
We started walking the streets and did some browsing in the shops along the way finding some souvenirs and gifts for folks back home. It's kind of amazing how in just a few short hours you can get to know the streets of a town! At the end of our first day we took a cocktail cruise on Mahi Cruises to enjoy the harbor on the water some. The fog certainly lent to the "spooky" atmosphere of the town!
After our cruise we headed out to find the Lobster Shanty. Recommended by one of my cousins, this place also was featured on Diners, Drive-in's and Dives so we felt it very necessary to check it out.
When eating at the Lobster Shanty, you definitely need to order lobster, right? I opted to try the lobster rangoon that was served with sweet chili sauce (which I am pretty sure was Frank's Sweet Chili Sauce) and the classic lobster roll served in a warm butter sauce.
The first thing we did after brunch on Sunday morning was find the Bewitched statue. Bewitched was my favorite show as a young girl and I remember watching the show where Sam and Darren were visiting Salem as I was walking those streets! Of course, I had to have my photo taken with Samantha on her broom. 🙂
Next stop was a walk down the wharf. The air was just full of misty dampness that was actually a relief for the heat. See that Grumpy man up above? I love him! 🙂
As my family will contest, I have always had a huge affection for all things candy! Hence, our next stop at Ye Olde Pepper Company Candy shoppe was just plain inevitable! We left with some hard maple candies, some homemade fudge and some swedish fish. Since it was so hot and we had no cool place to store chocolate, I didn't dare buy any - except for the one piece of chocolate coated caramel sprinkled with some sea salt, which I promptly popped in my mouth!
The stop at Mercy Tavern was very unplanned but was actually the one spot in particular that we will go back to when in Salem. While we did not have a meal there (we were going to attend Taste of the Gables so we didn't want to fill on food) we enjoyed a roasted pepper appetizer and a beverage. The atmosphere in the tavern was relaxing, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the drinks and appetizer we had was incredible. Who would have thought that a simple plate of roasted peppers with grated parm and lime would be so special? By far, this was our favorite place we ate at while in Salem. Breakfast both morning's were a bomb and dinner at the Lobster Shanty was slightly disappointing because we were expecting
Right across the road from the candy shop was our final destination for that day, The House of the Seven Gables. We were to be attending a Taste of the Gables fund raising event. All proceeds from this event go for the mission of at risk students and the preservation of the historic houses and grounds on the campus. This was a great opportunity for us to mingle with some of the locals, taste food from local restaurants, and give toward their fundraiser. They also had a live and silent auction to raise funds. It was right on the oceanfront and the food was served by over 25 local chefs and vendors offering up delicious little bites of their wares!
I am so happy we went to Salem! The only thing that would have made this trip better would have been to be able to actually go during Halloween 🙂 We are definitely going back because it is a real short drive. We also want to go back to visit Boston, Plymouth, and Cape Cod! I guess our short little excursions are going to become east coast centered! There is so much to do and see that we may have to take several of them!
Before I leave today, I am sharing with you this recipe for Air Frier Shishito Peppers. I bought my airfryer earlier this year and we absolutely LOVE it! Grumpy is known to cook all by himself with that magical machine! You can cook everything in it from french fries to hot dogs and of course, you can air fry your peppers too! I bought the accessories that all you to do other things like make kabobs, bake cookies, cakes, you name it!
These air fried peppers are SO easy to make and have just two ingredients (not including the salt, pepper, and lime juice). This low carb snack is Keto friendly!
Air Fried Shishito Peppers

- 6 oz Shishito peppers
- salt and pepper to taste
- ½ tablespoon avocado oil
- ¼ cup Asiagio Cheese grated fine
- 1 Limes
- Rinse peppers with water and pat dry with paper towel. Place in bowl and toss with avocado oil, salt, and pepper. Place in air fryer and cook at 350 for 10 minutes. Watch carefully. You want them to come out blistered looking but not burnt.
- Place shishito peppers on serving platter. Drizzle with a little lime juice and top with grated asiago cheese. Serve!
