Key Ingredients for Sausage Breakfast Casserole
See the recipe card below for a complete list of ingredients and instructions.

- Ground breakfast sausage: adds savory flavor and makes the casserole hearty.
- Eggs: create a fluffy, custard-like base that ties everything together.
- Half and half: makes the eggs creamy and rich.
- Cheddar cheese: sharp flavor that melts beautifully into the casserole.
- Frozen tater tots: the golden, crispy topping that makes this casserole irresistible.

Ingredient Substitutions
- Use ground turkey sausage instead of pork for a lighter version.
- Swap whole milk for half and half if you want a slightly lighter texture.
- Try Monterey Jack or Colby cheese in place of cheddar for a milder flavor.

Variations on Tater Tot Breakfast Casserole
- Vegetable loaded: add sauteed peppers, onions, or spinach to the egg mixture.
- Southwest style: stir in green chiles and top with salsa or hot sauce.
- Bacon lover's: replace sausage with crumbled cooked bacon.

Tips for Perfect Tater Tot Casserole
- Keep tots frozen: this helps them crisp up nicely during baking.
- Drain the sausage well: prevents extra grease from making the casserole soggy.
- Let it rest: allowing it to sit 5 minutes after baking makes slicing easier.

How to Store and Reheat
Refrigerate leftovers in airtight container for up to 4 days. Reheat individual slices in the oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes, or microwave until heated through.
