    ❤️ Why you'll love it

✔️ Apple fritter doughnuts are delicious and crispy on the outside with a tender center with small pieces of apple from the using apple pie filling.

✔️ You can make your own apple fritters recipe for less than you would pay for them at your local donut shop.

All purpose Flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt are the dry ingredients for this recipe.

Cinnamon and nutmeg give added flavor to the apple fritter.

Milk and apple pie filling, I make my mom's recipe for homemade apple pie filling, but you can use canned pie filling as well.

Vanilla extract is added as a flavor enhancer, this is my pick for vanilla extract. It's very affordable!

Butter adds more moisture and flavor.

    Vegetable oil for deep frying

A pot of hot grease frying the dough.

    🔪 Instructions

    1. Line a baking sheet with paper towels and set aside. In a large bowl, sift flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg.
    2. In a medium bowl, whisk milk, apple pie filling, vanilla, and melted butter. Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until combined.
    3. Heat the oil over medium-high heat in a large dutch oven to 350°F. Scoop donut batter with a small cookie scoop, carefully placing into hot oil. Cook for 1 minute, until fritters are brown on bottom side.
    4. Flip the apple fritters and cook another 2 minutes, until golden brown color and cooked on the inside. Remove the fritters from from the hot oil with a slotted spoon and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

    🥄 Equipment

Deep fryer or large dutch oven

Mixing bowls, I love this set with the gripper bottoms.

Food chopper, I use this to chop the apples in the pie filling up into smaller pieces.

    Wooden mixing spoon

Candy thermometer to check temperature of the oil.

Small cookie scoop, I use this to drop the batter into the hot oil.

Paper towels to absorb grease when draining fritters.

    🥫Storage

Store in an airtight container on the counter up to 3 days, or on the freezer up to 3 months. To reheat apple fritters, place in an air fryer or oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes, until hot. Serve as suggested.

    📖 Variations

    • Substitute 1-½ teaspoons of this Apple Spice Blend for the cinnamon and nutmeg.
    • Use cherry pie filling in place of the apple pie filling, almond extract for vanilla extract and eliminate the spices.
    • In a small bowl, mix 2 cups powdered sugar with enough milk to make a thick glaze then dip fritters into glaze and place on wire rack to dry.
    • Substitute 1 cup chopped fresh apples for the apple filling. Honeycrisp or Granny smith apples are good crisp apples to use.
    • For a deeper caramel like flavor substitute brown sugar for the granulated sugar.

    💭 Pro Tip

    • If dipping fritters in a glaze, place parchment paper beneath the wire rack to catch drips.

These sound perfect for a cool, fall morning. My family likes to make a big "breakfast" at some point on Sundays (it is served for actual breakfast but sometimes dinner after church or supper at night) and I think this would be a hit with my family.

I make fritters at least once every apple season and I certainly want to make your Mom's pie filling so this will be my fritter recipe this Fall.

I have been looking forward to seeing these puppies ever since I saw the sneak peek picture! They look scrumptious! I too have an aversion to frying things... but am going to have to throw it out the window for a batch of these!
