Ingredients for Easy Homemade Alfredo Sauce
Just a few basic ingredients make this creamy delicious homemade alfredo sauce.
Bubbly butter with fresh chopped garlic in a saucepan
A lot of garlic means a lot of flavor!
Pouring white wine into the garlic butter mixture.
A dry white wine (or chicken broth) de-glazes the pan and reduces, adding flavor to the alfredo sauce.
Reducing the wine and garlic mixture down.
Once the wine is added, it will simmer until reduced by half, concentrating the flavors.

    🥘 Ingredients

Half and half and Reduced-fat cream cheese: these are the main ingredients that make up the bulk of the sauce

Dry white wine: used to add distinct flavor to to the alfredo sauce.

Fresh parmesan cheese: adds flavor and saltiness to the sauce. Be sure to use freshly grated for the best parmesan flavor.

    Fresh garlic cloves minced

Unsalted butter: I highly recommend using unsalted butter and just add salt to taste.

Salt and black pepper: used to season the alfredo sauce.

Adding cream cheese to the garlic mixture.
Using a reduced fat cream cheese aids in thickening the sauce without adding too much fat.
Simmering the alfredo sauce to thicken.
Once all ingredients are added, the sauce will simmer until it has thickened. This will happen quickly.

    🔪 Instructions

    1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat until bubbly.
    2. Reduce to medium-low heat and stir in the garlic and cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes, until garlic just starts to turn brown.
    3. Add the white wine and bring to a simmer. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
    4. Whisk in the cream cheese until smooth, then add the half and half, whisking constantly.
    5. Bring the sauce to a low boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, until sauce begins to thicken to desired consistency.
    6. Stir in the parmesan cheese and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Freshly grated parmesan cheese in white sauce.
Grating your own fresh parmesan cheese works best in this sauce.

    🥄 Equipment

    Large skillet

    Garlic press

    Measuring cups

    Hand whisk

    🥫Storage

Store leftover alfredo sauce in an airtight container in the fridge up to 4 days or in the freezer up to 3 months.

    📖 Variations

    • Chicken broth can be used in place of wine, but remember this will affect the flavor of the sauce.
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder can be substituted for the fresh minced garlic.
    • For a thicker sauce, use the entire 8 ounces of cream cheese.

    💭 Tips

    • The secret ingredient for a creamy white sauce is to simmer it over very low heat, allowing the sauce to bubble slowly. As it does so, the sauce will reduce in volume and thicken.
    • For best results, be sure the cream cheese is very soft before adding to the garlic wine sauce. This will ensure no lumps.
    • If the sauce becomes too thick, thin it out some with a little more half and half.

I like to store my alfredo sauce in a pint sized jar (it fits perfectly!) in the fridge.

    🏫 The last word

Classic alfredo sauce generally does not need a thickening agent as it relies on the heavy whipping cream to do so. I left out the heavy whipping cream and relied on a combination of half and half and cream cheese.

Cream cheese works as a thickening agent in this cream sauce eliminating the need for a thickener such as cornstarch or flour.
