Creamy Hot Cocoa with Peppermint is a sugar-free, low carb high-fat beverage that is perfect for the keto diet! Creamy and delicious with just the right amount of chocolate and a touch of peppermint, this warm you up drink is delicious topped off with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of sugar-free peppermint candies.

A Family Tradition with Creamy Hot Cocoa

When the wind chill drops to 30 degrees below, you start thinking of what you can do to warm you up. Growing up, I always loved to have a mug of creamy hot cocoa after being outside playing in the mountains of snow. We would play outside for hours then come in and have a hot cup of homemade cocoa that mom would make special just for us.

Mom carried that tradition on with my boys and would make homemade hot chocolate for them. They would sit at the table with Poppa and while he was having his coffee, the boys would sit there with their hot cocoa and would sip it off the spoon. They thought they were such big wig's having a special treat with Poppa.

What you need to make this recipe

Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips: I like to use dark chocolate. I feel it makes the hot cocoa have a better chocolate flavor.

Heavy Cream: To keep carbs down and fats up, I went with heavy cream. This also is what makes this hot chocolate recipe creamy.

Almond Milk: Choose unsweetened almond milk. I like the unflavored also, but if you want unsweetened vanilla, that will probably be fine also.

Sugar-Free Peppermint Candies: this is for crushing and topping the hot cocoa and is optional.

Peppermint Extract: for flavoring the hot cocoa with peppermint flavors. This is my favorite brand!

Make this Creamy Hot Cocoa your way!

There are so many different flavor profiles you can give to this creamy hot cocoa recipe. While I went with peppermint, you could do rum, caramel, or coconut, or vanilla extract! I also like to sometimes add a shot of almond liquor.

As a child, I loved to put marshmallows in mine. I did buy some peppermint-flavored marshmallows for the kids to use and I made some sugar-free peppermint-flavored whipped cream to top my creamy hot cocoa with!

Don't have chocolate chips? That's ok, you can use cocoa powder. Just whisk in 4 tablespoons of cocoa powder with the sweetener before adding the heavy cream and almond milk.

What to enjoy with Creamy Hot Cocoa

Everyone loves cookies with their creamy hot cocoa right? This low carb mocha chip biscotti is a perfect match for the keto dieter to go with the hot cocoa. These Strawberry Rhubarb Thumbprints are another keto cookie that you may want to try. Swap the rhubarb filling out for a sugar-free filling of your own.

Kids will love this Triple Chocolate Almond Biscotti. There are plenty of mini candy-coated chocolate pieces in this cookie!

If you want a little less chocolate to go with your creamy hot cocoa, then these Chewy Mocha Toffee Chip Cookies are to die for! These are my most favorite chewy cookie on the blog.
