Key Ingredients for Caramelized Onions
See the recipe card at the end of this post for a full list of ingredients and instructions.

- Onions: yellow onions are classic for caramelizing because of their natural sweetness.
- Olive oil and butter: a mix of both gives flavor and prevents sticking.
- Brown sugar: optional, but it enhances the sweetness and deepens the golden color.
- Salt and pepper: balances and brings out the flavors.
Ingredient Substitutions
- Red onions: use for a slightly sharper, bolder taste.
- Ghee: swap for butter if you want a richer, nutty flavor.
- Balsamic vinegar or red wine: add a splash in place of brown sugar for a tangy sweetness.
- Honey swap: use honey in place of brown sugar.
- Make this low carb: leave out the brown sugar or substituting a sugar-free brown sugar.
Variations on Caramelized Onions
- Garlic twist: add minced garlic in the last few minutes of cooking for savory depth.
- Herb flavor: stir in fresh thyme or rosemary while the onions cook.
- Spicy kick: add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes for heat.
Tips for Perfect Caramelized Onions
- Go low and slow. Cooking over medium-low heat prevents burning and allows sugars to develop.
- Stir occasionally. Too much stirring prevents browning, but don't let them stick.
- Deglaze if needed. Use a splash of water, broth, or wine to release browned bits for extra flavor.

How to Store and Reheat
Refrigerate caramelized onions in an airtight container for up to 1 week. Reheat gently in a skillet over low heat with a splash of water to bring them back to life.
