Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat the bottom and sides of baking dish cooking spray and set aside.
In a large bowl, stir together the melted butter and granulated sugar.Using an electric mixer on low speed, add the vanilla extract and eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Set the egg mixture aside.
In another large bowl, sift together the flour, salt, and cocoa powder.Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing with the electric mixer, until ingredients are incorporated.
Stir in the chocolate chips (if using).
Transfer the brownie batter to the prepared pan and spread batter evenly in the dish using the back of a spoon.
Place dish in oven and bake for 35 minutes, until brownies have set and a cake tester inserted into the center of the pan comes out clean.
Cool completely on a wire rack before cutting brownies.
