Melt butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions, salt, and pepper and bring to a sizzle. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and cool for 16 minutes.
To make the dip
In a large bowl, using an electric hand mixer, blend the cream cheese until smooth.
Add sour cream and and mix until creamy.
Add the cooled onions and stir to combine. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
