Place the chicken legs in the air fryer basket or tray in a single layer making sure to leave space between the drumsticks. Season with salt and pepper.
Slide the air fryer basket or tray into the air fryer and set the cooking time for 30 minutes at 400 degrees F.
Pull out the basket and flip the chicken legs over. Return to the air fryer and cook for 5 more minutes, until internal temperature is 165 degrees F.
At this point, If coating the chicken legs with a bbq sauce, pull out the basket and coat the chicken with the sauce using a silicone brush. Return the chicken legs to the air fryer and cook for 2 additional minutes, until chicken legs are golden and have a crispy skin.
