Featured Image for german chocolate bundt cake.

This German Chocolate Bundt Cake recipe is a delicious bundt cake version of the original German chocolate cake cake recipe. It is one of the most delicious recipes with a coconut pecan filling inside the center of the cake instead of the classic coconut pecan frosting on top.

It is chocolatey german chocolate bundt cake that is perfect for special dessert night, birthdays, or holidays. I love to make this cake recipe for my Mom's birthday as it is her favorite cake.

    German Chocolate Bundt Cake

    🔪 Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 325°.

    To prepare streusel

    1. Lightly spoon the flour into a dry measuring cup and level with a knife. Combine the flour and brown sugar in a small bowl. Using a pastry blender or 2 knives cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles a coarse meal. Stir in coconut and pecans. Set aside.

    For the cake

    1. Coat a 12-cup Bundt cake pan with cooking spray. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon granulated sugar on the inside of bundt pan. Set aside.
    2. Combine cocoa powder and baking chocolate in a small bowl. Add the boiling water and stir until chocolate melts. Set aside.
    3. Using an electric mixer at medium speed, add the granulated sugar and butter to a large bowl and mix for 5 minutes, until well blended.
    4. Add the vanilla and egg whites, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.
    5. Lightly spoon the flour into dry measuring cups and level with a knife. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, stirring well with a whisk.
    6. With the electric mixer at low speed, add flour mixture to the sugar mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Stir the melted chocolate mixture.
    7. Spoon half of batter into the prepared pan and top with streusel.
    8. Spoon the remaining batter over streusel and smooth the top with the back of a spoon, being sure to cover the streusel mixture.
    9. Bake at 325° for 1 hour or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
    10. Cool in pan on a wire rack 10 minutes. Remove the cake from the pan and cool completely.

    To prepare glaze (optional)

    1. Combine powdered sugar and melted butter in a small bowl. Add the milk and stir with a whisk until smooth.
    2. Drizzle glaze over top of cake.

    🥄 Equipment

    Mixing bowls

    12-cup bundt pan

    Electric hand mixer

    Rubber spatula

    🥫Storage

Store this cake in an airtight container on the kitchen counter up to 3 days, in the fridge up to 1 week, or in the freezer up to 3 months.

    cake batter in mixing bowl

    📖 Variations

    • Substitute 3 tablespoons cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon of melted butter for the 1-ounce sweet baking chocolate.
    • Add chocolate chips to the streusel mixture
    • Substitute chopped walnuts for the pecans
    • Make a chocolate drizzle to top the cake instead of vanilla.
placing the filling on top of the first layer of cake batter

    💭 Tips

    • Fill the bundt cake pan with ½ of the cake batter. Take a tablespoon and in the center of the batter, make a well all around the cake pan. This makes a place for the coconut pecan filling to fit in nicely without spreading to the edges of the cake.
